Permalink Reply by Gary Miller on December 6, 2011 at 12:19am well i have i made that one 40 years and 300 knives ago. but your right those are some of the most intersting knives out there. thanks for the kind words.
I believed that my first knife was made out of a file until recently when I visited my mother, she returned to me a knife that I made in Jr. High School out of a broken hacksaw blade. My grinder was the sidewalk. I cut the basic knife shape wiith a pair of metal shears. The handle material was cut out of a piece 1 by 2 painted black. A humble begining.

Permalink Reply by James R Paul Jr on May 5, 2012 at 9:54pm I've only been at it about a year. My first decent knife was out of a vintage Simmons Steel and Saw circular blade. A nice thick one. I cut a very rough shape out with an acetylene torch, quenching as I went , and ground it on a bench grinder and finished sanding on an upside -down belt sander. It ended up a full tapered tang . Did a little file work on the thumb ramp and used cocabola for the slabs. 5.5 in oa , 2 7/8 blade.
Now I'm hooked !
I muddled thru finishing a few more w/ crude tools and really enjoyed it. Just bought a Grizzly G1015 blade sander/buffer and tomorrow I'll be building a bench for it. I can't remember ever being so excited about getting a tool before !
