Here's one for all the knifemakers out there: What did you use to make your first knife? Scrap metal? A spring? A saw blade?

I did ok with the choice of steel in 440C bar stock. But my shop equipment consisted of the very basics. I used a hand held drill. My grinder was a 3 x 21 belt sander held upside down on a 3 foot step ladder with two bungee cords. A Makita 10" blade miter saw completed my power tool trifecta. I thought I'd hit the big time when I bought that $300 grizzly 2" x 72" grinder a year later!

My first several pieces were garage door spring, little finger knives, with shaker pegs for handles, pretty basic. My equipment, if it can be called that, was a bench grinder, some files, lots of elbow grease. My Lady Wife still has a very early piece, she brings it out to keep me humble, from time to time.

It all started at a local blacksmith class , the second day after the instructor got to know all of us he asked if we would like to forge a railroad spike into a "letter opener" all said hell yes, since then I've been hooked on forging knives from some free leaf spring steel, great hobby, wish I had started years ago....D.M.C.
I made my first knife out of D2 using files. I was lucky to have a heat treating shop across the street from where I woked and the guy would do my knives while I was a work.
That was 38 years ago.
Sold my first knife in 1972 for $75.00 and bought a 1x42" belt sander for $49 the next day
My first knife was out of wood when I was a kid.1st real knife was out of 1095.A friend of mine had a grinder that he let me use. I used alot of sandpaper, and some files. To polish I used a dremel tool.I also had a hand held drill. That was all  I had back then.
My first knife without my Dad's hands touching it was a liner lock with a 440C stainless steel blade (I still have it).  I made 6 more folders that year and 2 since then.
I made my first knife out of a piece of scrap metel that had a hook on one end, my father gave it to me and said it was hardend steel and that it would make a great knife some day, so I bugged him until he showed me how to make one, I was about 11 years old, The hook, teamed up with another would have been used to lift wheelchears into a swimming pool. My father was a welder at Hunters point Naval yard so we were well set up for knife majing at our home, My father showed me how to use all the tools so I did all the work except cutting the shape with the torch, I left the hook on the back of the knife and when it was done he asked me what it could be used for, so I pulled out one of his beloved dutch ovens(we were avid campers) and proceded to take the top off with the hook, it was an instant hit, I've been making variations of the same knife ever since.

My first knife was made from a file. I had a nice hand held grinder and a hand held belt sander to finish it off.

I had a few files I used to work the edges with.

after that I've used saw blades, truck springs, lawn mower blades,RR spikes, and old chainsaw blades.

The first knife I made was from a chainsaw bar. It's a 9 1/2" blade. I made it stock removal method.

Put a brass guard, and an oak handle. All very heavy duty. I consider it half knife and half machette.

Although a little rough in appearance, it's still my favorite knife.

I used a Sears 2" x 42" belt grinder, a regular 6" wheel grinder for a buffer/polisher, A drill press that (if I remember correctly) I bought from knifekits.com (49.99!) and assorted hand tools to create a "totally authored by me" fixed blade knife with bocote scales out of D2

a pice of cross cut saw. put the steel in a vice and snapped  it down to size with a 4lb hammer. then slowly ground it on my grinder made out of an old washing machine motor. had to be carful not to touch the motor when it was running or ti would shock the fire out of you.

Those knives are very interesting and really cool! Keep grindin' R.W.!
