Permalink Reply by Canaan Isaac Shipp on October 12, 2011 at 1:04pm My first knife was made from a file. I had a nice hand held grinder and a hand held belt sander to finish it off.
I had a few files I used to work the edges with.
after that I've used saw blades, truck springs, lawn mower blades,RR spikes, and old chainsaw blades.

Permalink Reply by Russell Poche on October 19, 2011 at 8:41pm The first knife I made was from a chainsaw bar. It's a 9 1/2" blade. I made it stock removal method.
Put a brass guard, and an oak handle. All very heavy duty. I consider it half knife and half machette.
Although a little rough in appearance, it's still my favorite knife.
Permalink Reply by Stanley Jon Hockenbrock on December 5, 2011 at 10:25pm I used a Sears 2" x 42" belt grinder, a regular 6" wheel grinder for a buffer/polisher, A drill press that (if I remember correctly) I bought from knifekits.com (49.99!) and assorted hand tools to create a "totally authored by me" fixed blade knife with bocote scales out of D2
Permalink Reply by Gary Miller on December 5, 2011 at 11:52pm a pice of cross cut saw. put the steel in a vice and snapped it down to size with a 4lb hammer. then slowly ground it on my grinder made out of an old washing machine motor. had to be carful not to touch the motor when it was running or ti would shock the fire out of you.

I made my first knife out of a piece of scrap metel that had a hook on one end, my father gave it to me and said it was hardend steel and that it would make a great knife some day, so I bugged him until he showed me how to make one, I was about 11 years old, The hook, teamed up with another would have been used to lift wheelchears into a swimming pool. My father was a welder at Hunters point Naval yard so we were well set up for knife majing at our home, My father showed me how to use all the tools so I did all the work except cutting the shape with the torch, I left the hook on the back of the knife and when it was done he asked me what it could be used for, so I pulled out one of his beloved dutch ovens(we were avid campers) and proceded to take the top off with the hook, it was an instant hit, I've been making variations of the same knife ever since.
