Certain double-edged knives in Japan were banned following passage of legislation on Tuesday, October 21, according to the Associated Press.

Banned are all daggers and double-edged knives with blades 5.5 centimeters (2.2 inches) or more. Owners of these items must turn them over to law enforcement or export them out of the country within a six-month grace period.

Also included in the measure are further restrictions on gun ownership. People with a history of domestic violence or stalking, those who are bankrupt and those feared to commit suicide may not own a firearm. The people falling under these conditions will have between six months and one year to turn over their guns.

This marks the first time in 46 years the Japanese government has reworked its laws concerned knife ownership. Previously, any knife, sword or spear 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) or more were banned.

It was also the first time in 28 years the government revised its gun ownership laws.
